To care for residents' health and facilitate healthy relationships with neighbors, Formosa Plastics Group (FPG) – Mailiao assisted in establishing Yunlin Chang Gung Memorial Hospital. After the operations of the Hospital commenced at the end of 2009, FPG worked with Yunlin Chang Gung Memorial Hospital and Chang Gung University of Science and Technology to jointly execute the health facilitation and health education for residents living in coastal areas with respect to hospitals, communities, and school since 2010, improving the local conditions to set a model of healthy communities.

Improving Health Care Quality in Mailiao Township

Yunlin Chang Gung Hospital is located in the Mailiao, where the medical resources are severely limited. It takes on the responsibility of 24-hour emergency care in coastal areas since its opening in December 2009. In 2021, Yunlin Chang Gung Hospital had 300 medical staff members, 522 beds, and 23 services of both modern and traditional Chinese medical disciplines. For medical service volume, there were 147,321 outpatient visits, 13,628 emergency visits, and 19,289 bed/day of admissions. Its service scope and scale would continue to expand to improve the medical quality of coastal areas in Yunlin.

Free Health check-ups for Residents in Mailiao Area

Since 2010, FPG has entrusted the Yunlin Chang Gung Memorial Hospital to provide free health check-ups for the residents in Mailiao and Taixi townships. From 2019, there are two health checkup execution hospitals available for residents to choose from, including Yunlin Chang Gung Hospital and National Taiwan University Hospital Yunlin Branch. In 2021, there were 8,982 residents who participated in health check-ups, representing an increase of 19% from the 7,543 residents in the first year (2010). Residents who participated in health check-ups accounted for 62.5% of the registered population. By doing so, the residents are able to understand more about their health, discover potential diseases, and receive early treatment.

In 2018, the Formosa Health Care Team was established to carry out home visits for residents with Hepatitis C whose health checkup results showed higher abnormal rates, helping residents with Hepatitis C in making regular return visits for follow-up checks, so as to gain confidence in completing treatments. As of 2021, the Team provided care for 1,953 residents with Hepatitis C. In 2021, the prevalence of Hepatitis C in the health check-up results of residents from the two townships was 8.7%, representing a major decrease from 20.9% in 2010. This major local health issue has been improved proactively.

Health Promotion for Mailiao Residents

Since 2010, FPG has worked with Yunlin Chang Gung Memorial Hospital and Chang Gung University of Science and Technology to jointly promote health facilitation for residents in Mailiao and Taixi Townships. Since 2018, FPG has expanded the implementation scope to a total of seven townships with the additional inclusion of five other townships, including Sihu, Dongshi, Baochung, Lunbei, and Dacheng. As of 2021, the number of residents participating in the community health education program has reached 43,271, the number of students participating in the campus health education program has reached 102,890, and the number of residents participating in the screening. FPG also cooperated with ten community to hold elder health promotion , and nine local junior high schools and elementary schools to participate in the healthy campus organized by John Tung Foundation to actively communicate with residents the idea of healthy lifestyles.
