Through visiting and communicating with local agencies, gathering of environmental volunteers, second-hand charity sale, festival charitable activities, care for the elderly and youth, and care for disadvantaged groups, Formosa Plastics Group strives to actualize its goals of engaging in volunteering work and building good relations with local communities.
In order to promote good relations with the local communities, FPG has established community teams or volunteer teams in the management offices of the factories, which are responsible for promoting various kinds of work relating to relations with local communities. FPG sends monthly agents to visit environmental or local groups, village offices, neighboring residents, local people, and government agencies so as to listen to local opinions. The community team regularly sends people to participate in village meetings to fully understand the needs and opinions of the villagers, answer the questions in detail, and actively promote the company policy to the neighborhood in order to let them understand FPG's care for the local residents and build harmonious relationships based on mutual trust and support.
In order to be closer to the local residents and implement the policy of building good relations with local communities, FPG continues to promote the "Environmental Volunteer Day" and encourage the employees to volunteer and participate in the cleaning of neighboring communities and other voluntary work. The employees are also stimulated to assist in the maintenance and cleaning of local communities, mountain/beach cleaning, and environmental protection activities, etc. They can also form a volunteer team and spend one hour before work or on holidays to clean the roads around the factory entrances and nearby hiking trails to clean the surroundings and the mountainous areas. In addition, FPG has adopted Dakenggu and Dingliao Beach and sends managers and other employees to go pick up garbage and driftwood at the beach, ensuring that the beaches stay clean. To promote waste reduction, recycling, and reuse, FPG holds a flea market where unwanted goods are collected from both the employees and local residents; all the proceeds will be donated to charitable organizations.
Since its establishment, FPG has continued to engage in local charitable activities, including large-scale charitable activities organized by nearby organization and schools, e.g. ball tournaments held by county or city governments, activities and competitions held by organizations for people with disabilities, temple fairs, school anniversary celebrations/sports events, activities for villagers, festivals, etc. FPG sends people to help organize these events in hopes of building good relationships with local communities.
In order to further support local communities, FPG endeavors to give back to the local people by taking care of disadvantaged groups and low-income families (students). FPG regularly hosts charity fairs for disadvantaged children; the proceeds are used as the fund for free lunch offered to low-income children or scholarships for low-income students in local schools.
In addition, FPG's employees and contractors have also formed their own charitable clubs to spontaneously provide assistance for the elderly, children, disadvantaged groups and local residents in need of emergency relief. FPG hopes that through the continuous support for the disadvantaged by the company and all the employees, kindness can then be spread to every corner and a peaceful, caring and warm society can be achieved.
In order to pass on Taiwan’s traditional arts and highlight local cultural characteristics, FPG has been cooperating with troupes such as the "Ming Hwa Yuan Arts and Culture Group," "Paper Windmill Theatre," and "I Wan Jan Puppet Theater" since 2011. The troupes have performed at FPG factories in Yilan, Changhua, Yunlin, Chiayi, and Kaohsiung, allowing the local communities to be exposed to performances normally taking place National Theater. These performances also have helped promote aesthetic education and entertained the audiences. As of 2018, the cumulative number of audience has reached 336,000. The performing troupes have also been critically acclaimed.
In order to create a volunteering culture and encourage the employees to engage in volunteer work, FPG has continued to promote volunteer activities in different fields since 2013, encouraging the employees to spend their holidays or after-hours to clean or tutor (or act as a study companion) at registered social welfare organizations. The employees can also assist relevant organizations in holding various activities, such as donating materials needed by correctional institutions, making dumplings with students, cleaning, making monetary donations, tutoring children from disadvantaged families, or assisting in activities for children from the organizations. Since 2011, FPG has started the registration of volunteer service hours, and the employees will receive a monetary reward for every 15 hours of service hours. FPG also hopes to motivate more employees to provide help for society.
