Mailiao Harbor was approved the Executive Yuan in 1993 and the construction began in the same year. It has become the harbor with the deepest fairway in Taiwan and the only deep-water harbor for 300,000-ton tankers; it has an annual throughput of more than 70 million tons. Following Formosa Plastics Group Chairman's announcement of sustainable environmental policy and the assistance provided by Environmental Protection Administration, Industrial Development Bureau, and Yunlin County Government, Mailiao Harbor has continued to work towards the goals of green, ecological, and sustainable operations. Pollution prevention and control measures include high-voltage shore power facilities, vessels using low-sulfur fuel oil, vessels slowing down when entering and leaving the harbor, control of old diesel vehicles in the harbor area, solar power for navigation poles, and lighting completely replaced with LED lights. The results were recognized this year on September 7th by the European Sea Ports Organisation (ESPO) and obtained the "EcoPort" certification, making Mailiao Harbor the first industrial harbor in Asia to have received this honor.
In order to let people know more about the implementation results of the industrial and sustainable development of Mailiao Harbor, "Mailiao Industrial Harbor Shore Power System Groundbreaking & Eco Port Certification Conferment Ceremony" was held at 10 a.m. on October 5th, 2018 (Friday) at Mailiao Harbor. The event invited Environmental Protection Administration, Coast Guard Administration, Executive Yuan, Protection Agency of the Executive Yuan, the Oceanic Committee of the Executive Yuan, Industrial Development Bureau, Yunlin County Government and legislators. In the future, Mailiao Harbor will continue to adopt a series of environmental measures and strives to become a model as a sustainable industrial harbor in the global stage.
