In a bid to fulfill corporate social responsibility and create a better living environ-ment, Formosa Plastics Group (Formosa Plastics, Nan Ya, Formosa Chemicals & Fibre, Formosa Petrochemical, and reinvestment companies) announced the objec-tive of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. Aside from their implementation of circular economies, carbon reduction, and other improvements, they are actively implementing solar energy to achieve their objective of carbon reduction by in-creasing the utilization rate of renewable energy.
According to statistics by the Bureau of Energy, MoEA, Taiwan's solar PV device capacity at the end of 2021 was 7.7GW. This helps meet the Executive Yuan's mile-stone of having renewable energies account for more than 20% of total energy gen-eration by 2025 as stated in the National Climate Change Action Guidelines; in terms of solar PV device capacity, development will advance towards the objective of exceeding 20GW. As such, Formosa Plastics Group began investments into solar PV in 2013 to complete 4.2MW device capacity in the end of 2021; this is estimat-ed to decrease annual CO2 emissions by 2,682 tons.
Formosa Plastic Group's efforts to further increase the utilization rate of renewable energy in the past 2 years saw their comprehensive review and assessment of all fac-tories, dormitories, parking lot rooftops, and land unable to be cultivated due to subsidence for their viability in installing solar PV facilities.
After careful inventory and planning, the group will increase solar PV facilities by an additional device capacity of 184.3MW. In order to accelerate their construction, professional suppliers have been contracted to complete design and construction as fast as possible.
Estimation of the carbon emission factor for energy sources that will be replaced shows that upon completion of the projects above, approximately 232,053kWh en-ergy will be generated annually. This will provide enough energy for the 41,426kWh required to power living areas in all plants as well as additional energy for factories to decrease CO2 emissions by 190,000 tons. Hopefully, the consolida-tion of enterprise resources within Taiwan can drastically increase green energy gen-eration while reducing the ratio of fuel power generation so that we may work to-gether and protect our home and this Earth.
Our world is currently undergoing a critical period in energy transformation and green energy development has become the driving force behind economic devel-opment. As such, Formosa Plastics Group will play a key leading role in the pursuit of sustainable development and show full dedication in promoting solar energy. Our active implementation of clean energy and healthier living environments will also result in the simultaneous promotion of tasks such as recycling plastics and chemical fibres, green procurement, and our objective of a paperless enterprise. Through these efforts, we will fulfill our corporate social responsibility and create sustainable environments.
