For the purpose of promoting resource recycle and reuse, the Ministry of Envi-ronment ("MOE") names "Outstanding Company Performance in Resource Circula-tion" and presents awards to the winners every year. The program is intended to en-courage businesses to become more efficient in resource utilization by means of source design, and a better management in waste reduction, recycling, reuse and re-generation. The program also encourages active investment in reutilization of recy-cled materials and wasted resources in order to achieve a sustainable resource cycle.
Formosa Plastics Group ("FPG") has been promoting recycling for years. In 2006, FPG formed its own promoter organization in energy conservation, emission reduction, and circular economy that review the progress regularly. FPG understands that a plant's waste materials may be another plant's resource or energy souce. There-fore, in 2016, the group took a step further and chose raw materials, water resources, energy, and waste to be the four aspects to be considered in the overall effort. FPG gives full support to cross-plant and cross-company resource integration and reuse in the interest of energy conservation, carbon reduction, and energy efficiency.
In 2023, FPG participated in the nomination for "Outstanding Company Perfor-mance in Resource Circulation" by MOE. 5 companies were named the winners, in-cluding Formosa Plastics Corporation for turning recycled oyster shells into antibac-terial synthetic materials, Nan Ya Plastics Corporation for turning recycled plastic bottles into environmentally friendly fibers, Formosa Chemicals & Fibre Corp for turning recycled fishing nets and oyster ropes into nylon materials, Nanya Technolo-gy for recycling and reusing concentrated isopropanol from wastewater, and Formosa Sumco Technology for recycling and reusing silica mortar from manufacturing pro-cesses. In particular, Nan Ya and FCFC received the top honor, the Gold Award, and FPC and Nan Ya Technology and Formosa Sumco Technology received the Silver Award.
MOE presented the awards on December 1. Heads of the winning divisions from FPG attended in person to accept the awards. At the invitation of the organizer, Nan Ya shared the techniques of classifying recycled plastic bottle sheets and turning them into environmentally friendly premium fibers, and FCFC presented the process and technology of turning recycled fishing nets and oyster ropes into nylon and nylon materials. These recycled materials can be used in outdoor appraisals and other envi-ronmentally friendly products and in turn facilitate more efficient recycling and re-use in different fields.
