Establishing FPG's healthcare team
To address conservative attitudes toward seeking medical care in remote areas and the challenges posed by inconvenient transportation, the Formosa Health Care Team was established in 2018. The team consists of 10 nurses, 1 nutritionist, and 1 fitness coach. They integrate residents’ health examination data and provide home-based family health assessments and personalized health promotion services, including nursing guidance and health education, individualized fitness programs, nutritional and dietary recommendations, and accompaniment to medical appointments for elderly residents when necessary. The team’s services focus on hepatitis C, diabetes, obesity, coronary heart disease, individuals at high risk of osteoporosis, chronic kidney disease, and degenerative joint disease. As of 2025, a total of 8,289 individuals have received home-based health care services, with 130,906 service encounters provided, including home visits, telephone follow-ups, and care consultations. The team has expanded its outreach to 44 community service sites across eight townships in Yunlin County and Changhua County, where 98 local volunteers have been recruited and trained. Group health promotion activities and volunteer services have accumulated 81,458 service hours. Notably, the team actively addressed the high hepatitis C prevalence rates in two townships by conducting home visits, assisting residents with regular follow-up examinations, and encouraging them to complete treatment with confidence. As of 2025, 2,380 residents with hepatitis C have received care. The prevalence rate of hepatitis C in the 2025 health examination results for these two townships was 6.9%, representing a reduction of more than 50% compared to 20.9% in 2010. This reflects the team’s proactive efforts to address major local health issues.
Health promotion for Mailiao residents
Since 2010, Formosa Plastics Corporation’s Mailiao Industrial Complex has been collaborating with Chang Gung University of Science and Technology and Chang Gung Memorial Hospital to promote health among the residents of Mailiao and Taixi. Starting in 2018, based on the experience in these two villages, the scope was expanded to include the villages of Sihu, Dongshi, Baozhong, Lunbei, and Dacheng, making a total of seven villages. By 2025, community health education had engaged 70,443 local residents, school health education had involved 127,807 students, and community disease prevention screenings had reached 16,154 residents. These efforts have involved collaboration with 81 communities and 43 schools to promote health programs for older adults and schoolchildren, caring for the health of local schoolchildren in Mailiao’s neighboring areas and actively advocated for healthy lifestyle habits among residents.
Since 2020, Formosa Plastics Corporation, in collaboration with Yunlin Chang Gung Memorial Hospital and Chang Gung University of Science and Technology, has been hosting senior summer camp activities in seven neighboring towns as part of the community health promotion efforts. In addition to promoting health education courses for the elderly, the camp also engages participants in fun games designed to stimulate the brain and exercise the body, helping to reduce the onset of disability and dementia symptoms. In 2025, the community health promotion and senior summer camp event saw participation from 300 elderly residents from 7 communities.
Combining Chang Gung's medical and educational resources to promote residents' health
The scope of implementation was expanded to five townships, namely Sihu, Dongshi, Baozhong, Lunbei, and Dacheng, based on the implementation experience in Mailiao and Taixi Townships. We combined the medical and educational resources of Chang Gung to implement health education, disease prevention screening, hepatitis prevention, and weight loss among local residents based on their health issues and needs, in order to improve the health of local residents.
