Health examinations provided to Mailiao and Taixi Townships free of charge to maintain residents' health
We began commissioning Yunlin Chang Gung Memorial Hospital to provide health examinations to residents of Mailiao and Taixi Townships free of charge in 2010. Starting in 2019, we provided two hospitals, including Yunlin Chang Gung Memorial Hospital and National Taiwan University Hospital Yunlin Branch, for residents to choose from for their health examination. A total of 15,433 residents received health examinations in 2024, an increase of 104% compared to the 7,543 people in 2010. Residents received a total of 151,323 health examinations in the 15 years from 2010 to 2024, and the number of residents that received health examinations accounted for 70.2% of the total number of people registered there. The health examinations allow residents to understand their health condition, discover the threat of potential illness at an early stage, and receive early treatment.

Establishing FPG's healthcare team
To address the conservative local customs in remote areas regarding medical care and the challenges of inconvenient transportation, the Formosa Health Care Team was established in 2018. The team consists of 13 members, including 11 nurses, 1 nutritionist, and 1 fitness coach. They connect residents' health check data and provide home-based health assessments and personalized health promotion services. In 2024, the team conducted 1,406 initial/3,415 follow-up home visits (with a focus on hepatitis C, diabetes, coronary heart disease, and obesity), 6,016 phone consultations, 8,246 group health care sessions (including local volunteer training and community health promotion activities), and 229 hospital accompaniment services. From the establishment of the health care team to December 2024, a total of 92,613 health care services have been provided. Notably, the team actively addressed the high abnormal health check results for hepatitis C in two villages, assisting residents in regularly returning for check-ups and encouraging them to complete their treatment with confidence. As of 2024, 2,726 hepatitis C patients have been cared for. The prevalence rate of hepatitis C in the 2024 health check results for the two villages was 8.1%, which is more than a 50% decrease from 20.9% in 2010. This reflects the team's active efforts to improve local major health issues.
Health promotion for Mailiao residents
Since 2010, Formosa Plastics Corporation’s Mailiao Industrial Complex has been collaborating with Chang Gung University of Science and Technology and Chang Gung Memorial Hospital to promote health among the residents of Mailiao and Taixi. Starting in 2018, based on the experience in these two villages, the scope was expanded to include the villages of Sihu, Dongshi, Baozhong, Lunbei, and Dacheng, making a total of seven villages. By 2024, community health education had engaged 65,501 local residents, school health education had involved 121,913 students, and community disease prevention screenings had reached 15,083 residents. Additionally, the initiative has promoted health activities for the elderly in ten communities and collaborated with 21 local schools on the Dong’s Foundation "Happy Movement Campus" program, which involved 7,269 teachers and students and accumulated 1.32 million laps around the school playground, equivalent to circling Taiwan 231 times. These efforts also focused on caring for the health of local schoolchildren in Mailiao’s neighboring areas and actively advocated for healthy lifestyle habits among residents.
Since 2020, Formosa Plastics Corporation, in collaboration with Yunlin Chang Gung Memorial Hospital and Chang Gung University of Science and Technology, has been hosting senior summer camp activities in seven neighboring towns as part of the community health promotion efforts. In addition to promoting health education courses for the elderly, the camp also engages participants in fun games designed to stimulate the brain and exercise the body, helping to reduce the onset of disability and dementia symptoms. In 2024, the community health promotion and senior summer camp event saw participation from 289 elderly residents from 8 communities.
Combining Chang Gung's medical and educational resources to promote residents' health
The scope of implementation was expanded to five townships, namely Sihu, Dongshi, Baozhong, Lunbei, and Dacheng, based on the implementation experience in Mailiao and Taixi Townships. We combined the medical and educational resources of Chang Gung to implement health education, disease prevention screening, hepatitis prevention, and weight loss among local residents based on their health issues and needs, in order to improve the health of local residents.
