Statistics of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations pointed out that one third of food produced around the world each year is wasted, and additional carbon emissions are generated to handle the leftovers. Executive Member Ruey-Yu Wang of FPG Executive Management Committee, who is also the chairperson of Wang Chang-Gung Charity Trust, believes that Earth has limited resources and wasting food not only causes economic losses, but also makes global warming more severe. The promotion of cherish food and surplus food will not only effectively utilize resources, but also allow underprivileged people to have enough food.

Supporting surplus food actions starting in 2019 to help the underprivileged

FPG began working with Jen Ji Siang Social Service Institute in 2019, and donated NT$2.62 million for facilities and equipment on "Cherish Food Midway Island," increasing the institute's capacity to process donated supplies and distribute the food to units that provide homeless services, so that resources can be more effectively utilized in the long-term.

To help the homeless get back on their feet, FPG collaborated with the Homeless Taiwan Association in 2020 and established the first women's shelter in Northern Taiwan – Tanxinyuan. FPG further collaborated with "Do You a Flavor" in 2021 and established the first men's shelter – Baiweijiawu, which provides the homeless with guidance and training to become employed and rent a place.

FPG further donated NT$4.15 million to "Food Bank Sharing Park" in 2021 and supported resource integration of food banks by Jen Ji Siang Social Service Institute. Due to the pandemic in the past over two years, many families have been put on unpaid leave or become unemployed due to the decrease in economy activity. Combined with the turmoil in the international situation and climate change, raw material prices have risen drastically and led to even higher inflation and consumer price index. This has worsened the situation for underprivileged groups, and as a result, food banks have become the main source of basic supplies for underprivileged families, elderly people living alone, and the homeless.

Promote the concept of cherish food and surplus food and expand services to rural areas in Eastern Taiwan

We donated NT$3.48 million to help Jen Ji Siang Social Service Institute establish "Food Bank Sharing Park – Hualien Station" in 2022 again, in order to provide services to even more underprivileged families and promote the concepts of cherish food and surplus food. We hope to expand the scope of services to rural areas in Eastern Taiwan, in hopes of effectively utilizing donated supplies to help medium and small institutions, schools, communities, and tribes. The station is expected to provide services 6,000 person-times and reduce waste by nearly 500 metric tons each year, and achieve environmental protection and helping others.

FPG and Wang Chang-Gung Charity Trust were invited by Jen Ji Siang Social Service Institute to attend in the opening ceremony of the "Food Bank Sharing Park – Hualien Station" held at 10:00 A.M. on August 8 (Monday). Assistance Vice President Chen-Tian Lin of the Administration Department represented FPG and gave a speech at the ceremony. We hope to call on everyone to care for the underprivileged, and promote the concepts of cherish food and sharing surplus food.

Long-term efforts in the "Rural Area English Proficiency Improvement Project

FPG and Wang Chang-Gung Charity Trust, which was established by FPG Founder Yung-Ching Wang in 2002, uphold the spirit to take from society and give back to society. The trust has worked with the government and other non-government organizations since it was established. Besides establishing a food bank in Hualien together with Jen Ji Siang Social Service Institute, it has implemented the "Rural Area English Proficiency Improvement Project" to give elementary school students in Hualien the opportunity to directly learn English from Americans, to understand and experience different cultures, and also benefit citizen diplomacy. The trust has donated NT$24 million to the project and benefited 10,502 people between 2018 and 2021.

Continuing to expand assistance for underprivileged groups in society

Furthermore, FPG and Wang Chang-Gung Charity Trust planned different programs based on local needs, in order to take care of underprivileged people around Taiwan, such programs include the "Junior High School Skills Education Project," "Homeless Services Project," "Orphan Scholarship Program (assists children who have lost one or both parents to stably go to school)," "Underprivileged Junior High School Student Nutritious Breakfast Project (collaborated with junior high schools in rural areas to provide breakfast for underprivileged students, so that they can focus on their studies)," and "Early Intervention Service Efficacy Enhancement Program." The trust strives to provide proper care for all people in the surrounding environment, and spread love to more corners of the world.
